Year after year interest grows in using white poppies to balance the military emphasis of the red poppy campaign. in 2013 Vancouver Peace Poppies distributed over 4200 poppies across Canada, with almost 1000 going to schools. The white lapel poppies and mixed poppy wreaths are appropriate and powerful Remembrance Day symbols. There is no dishonour to veterans in telling the truth about war and working to ensure that no soldier ever has to suffer its horrors again. Despite polarized media coverage, it’s clear that many Canadians agree. Last year an estimated 15,000 Canadians chose to wear a white poppy.
Using of the white poppy in schools alongside the red, can help expand community discussions around issues of war and peace, and affirm the role of children in advocating for a society where all human lives are equally valued.
