BC has a legal obligation to respect children’s rights as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, specifically Articles 3, 6, 18, 19, 24, 27,and 31, as well as a 2006  Supreme Court of Canada decision.

We have 9 days to help put an end to punitive clawback policies that hurt our most vulnerable students. Please help. Contact your MLA this week.

Please call or email your MLA before February 1 and demand this punitive policy is removed before the budget is announced this February.

Here is  one very dedicated teacher’s story: Anna Chudnovsky, a teacher in Vancouver, speaking passionately on how poverty affects one family in her classroom  or read The Tyee article In My Class, Child Poverty Is No Numbers Game …..Learning to ‘carry the one’ is so much harder for a hungry eight-year-old.

Go to Single Mothers’ Alliance BC to find out the facts about the government’s clawback policy.

The BCTF Executive Committee recently passed a motion “to achieve government policy that guarantees that there will be no clawback of child support from parents on income assistance” including “encouraging social justice contacts to lobby their MLAs before the 2015 budget announcement.”

Help end this injustice by contacting your MLA and sharing this information widely. Can you copy us so we can keep track of teachers’ stories that we can share? If there is anything else you need, or have ideas to get the word out with this campaign, please contact us at khartman@bctf.ca or sruzic@bctf.ca.
